ACEN Introduces the Program of Distinction to Recognize Excellence in Nursing Education

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) has introduced the ACEN Program of Distinction, a new recognition designed to honor nursing programs that demonstrate sustained excellence, innovation, and leadership in advancing quality nursing education.

Beginning in 2026, the Program of Distinction designation will be available to ACEN-accredited nursing programs across all levels—practical, diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master’s, and clinical doctorate. This recognition celebrates programs that exemplify the highest levels of achievement through long-term performance, meaningful outcome trends, and practices that strengthen nursing education and student success.

“The Program of Distinction highlights the remarkable work taking place within nursing programs that are committed to continuous improvement and educational innovation,” said Nell Ard, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, ACEN Chief Accreditation Officer.

“These programs contribute significantly to the advancement of the nursing profession, and we are proud to provide a platform that recognizes their leadership and impact.”

The designation is intended to showcase programs that:

  • Demonstrate consistent excellence and long-term outcome achievement
  • Foster innovation in curriculum, teaching, and student learning
  • Support a culture of faculty development and academic leadership
  • Serve as exemplars for other nursing education programs

Programs awarded the designation will continue to use the ACEN Accredited seal paired with the Program of Distinction mark, signifying their exceptional performance and leadership within the nursing education community.

The Program of Distinction also reinforces ACEN’s longstanding commitment to supporting programs that not only meet accreditation standards but also advance quality and drive progress across the profession.

The first eligibility check for the Program of Distinction is now open and runs through April 1, 2026. ACEN-accredited nursing programs are invited to review the purpose, eligibility requirements, criteria for distinction, and application process to see if they are a candidate.
