Dr. Alexandra Duke is a Director with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), a role that allows her to bring more than 16 years of expertise to the field. Dr. Duke completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Education at Ramapo College of New Jersey and Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Systems Leadership at Emory University. She holds national certifications in medical-surgical and emergency nursing, healthcare simulation, evidence-based practice, and nursing education. Dr. Duke's passion for advancing the science of nursing education, regulation, and accreditation is evident in her scholarly work.
Dr. Duke brings a wealth of experience from the clinical, academic, regulatory, and publishing industries to the ACEN. Her career began as an acute care nurse, providing care in adult medical-surgical, emergency, and interventional radiology departments. These early roles shaped her future as a nurse educator, a path she has followed with dedication and passion. Her most recent roles include serving as an Assistant Professor at an academic teaching institution in Northern California and an Associate Professor-Doctor of Nursing Practice Coordinator for a private nursing program in Atlanta, Georgia. In these positions, she taught a wide range of courses, from pre- and post-licensure to doctoral, including Foundations of Nursing Practice, Health Assessment, Advanced Research Methods, Evidence-Based Practice, Essentials of Healthcare Simulation-based Learning for the Nurse Leader, Transforming Healthcare Through Interprofessional Collaboration, Practicum, and DNP Project. In addition, Dr. Duke's diverse experience includes roles as a Nursing Education Consultant for the California Board of Registered Nursing and Practice Transition Accreditation Program appraiser for the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Dr. Duke previously led the NCLEX content strategy team at Wolters Kluwer Health. In this role, she recruited and trained subject matter experts to achieve content creation and enrichment goals for digital learning products while executing plans regarding investment areas, resourcing approaches, costs, and timelines for nursing assessment performance. She also led the re-envisioning, designing, and execution of their NCLEX editorial advisory board and served as an item writer. Finally, Dr. Duke managed an external team of subject matter experts and psychometrician to develop an examination with predictive validity for prelicensure nursing students.
In 2020, Dr. Duke worked as a regulatory scholar for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and subsequently completed their International Center for Regulatory Scholarship program in 2022. These roles underscore her commitment to bridging intersections between nursing education, regulation, and practice. Dr. Duke is a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the National Black Nurses Association, DNPs of Color, and Sigma Theta Tau International. She has also presented at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, American Association of Colleges of Nursing Doctoral Education Conference, and other regional, state, and national conferences on healthcare simulation and nursing education topics.
